Bhubaneswar: A court in Ganjam district sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife.
Bhanjanagar Additional District Magistrate Devadatta Patnaik sentenced Raju Mully to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Gitanjali Mully.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, which will not be paid, resulting in an additional year of imprisonment, according to government lawyer Ushakant Patnaik.
The verdict was pronounced on the testimony and evidence of 18 witnesses. The events leading up to the murder began on the night of May 27, 2023, when Raju asked Gitanjali for money to perform the ‘Shraddha’ of her mother. After she refused, a fight broke out, and Raju killed his wife with a sharp weapon.
Following the murder, Raju informed his neighbours, who then alerted Jayanti, Gitanjali’s mother. Jayanti filed a complaint at the Bhanjanagar police station, leading to Raju’s arrest. He has been in jail since the incident.
