In an era where social media dominates our lives, it’s refreshing to see individuals who selflessly donate blood and platelets without seeking validation from the online world.
In recent years, a peculiar trend has emerged on social media platforms: people donating blood and then proudly uploading photos of themselves in the process. This phenomenon has sparked a mix of reactions, ranging from admiration and encouragement to criticism and concern.
This unsung hero’s dedication to helping others is truly inspiring. Despite his numerous donations, he chooses to keep a low profile, shying away from the social media spotlight. His actions speak louder than words, demonstrating the true essence of altruism.
In a world where selflessness and kindness often go unnoticed, Gouri Prasad Das stands out as a shining example of compassion and dedication. With an astonishing 130 platelet donations and 26 blood donations under his belt, Das has earned recognition not only nationally but also internationally. His journey in this sacred cause began when he was just 16 years old, and since then, he has been tirelessly working towards making a difference in the lives of others.
His unwavering commitment to blood donation has led to numerous accolades, including a place in the International Book of World Records. His selfless acts have been acknowledged by esteemed organizations such as the Commissionerate Police, World Health Organization, National Blood Donors’ Association, Rotary Club, Cancer Foundation Trust, Wellness Foundation Delhi, and KAPOCH (Kalinga Association For Protection Of Culture & Heritage).
In a poignant encounter with Ommcom News, Gouri Prasad Das shared a heart-wrenching story that would change the course of his life forever. The tragic loss of his niece due to a severe shortage of platelets left an indelible mark on his heart. This devastating experience ignited a sense of purpose within him, and he made a solemn vow to dedicate his life to helping others by donating platelets.
Since then he has not looked back. With unwavering commitment and compassion, he has since become a stalwart advocate for blood donation, inspiring countless others to follow in his footsteps. Through his tireless efforts, Das has not only saved numerous lives but has also created a ripple effect of kindness and generosity.
“I will never forget the day my niece was born. Becoming an uncle was a dream come true, and I was over the moon with joy. I still recall the moment I held her in my arms – it was as if time had stood still. She was the only daughter in our family, and I was so proud to have her in my life. I was so elated that I even threw a grand party for my friends, selling my watch to celebrate her arrival. She was that precious to me. But life had other plans. Just as we were basking in the glow of her new life, she developed a serious infection when she was barely a month old. The doctors told us that she needed platelets, and I was faced with a harsh reality – the scarcity of blood and platelets can be a matter of life and death. This was 20 years ago, when donating blood was still a daunting prospect for many. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t save her,” said Gouri in a choking voice.
He continued: “That moment changed me forever. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality that the dearth of blood and platelets can claim lives. I realized that I had to do something to make a difference. And so, I made a promise to myself – to donate platelets and blood to save lives. It was a small step, but one that has given me a new sense of purpose. I have been donating ever since, and it’s a decision that has brought me immense joy and fulfilment.”
Gouri’s journey as a blood donor began when he was just 16 years old. However, his enthusiasm was met with disapproval from his parents, who scolded him for donating blood at such a young age, as he was still a minor, below the legal age of 18.
Undeterred, Gouri continued to pursue his passion for helping others. Eight years later, at the age of 24, he took his first step into platelet donation. This marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to donating this vital component, which has since become a hallmark of his altruistic endeavours.
Initially, Gouri would voluntarily donate blood at various blood donation camps. However, in some cases, he would specifically opt to donate platelets instead of blood. To date, he has donated platelets an impressive 130 times. He donates platelets around 20-25 times a year and is always ready to help whenever someone is in need of this life-saving component.
Gouri, a once-regular blood and platelet donor, has grown disheartened by the changing landscape of blood donation. What was once a selfless act has, in his opinion, become increasingly commercialized. The altruistic spirit that once drove individuals to donate has given way to a desire for quick cash and social media fame.
“I’ve stopped donating blood and platelets regularly,” Gouri confessed in a message.
“The trend has shifted from genuine service to seeking publicity. If you’re truly passionate about blood donation, do it for the sake of helping those in need, not for personal gain”, he signed off.
