Bhubaneswar: Notorious brown sugar peddler Sheikh Jamshed sustained injuries during a police encounter at Khandagiri in Bhubaneswar late Thursday night, following an operation conducted by the Special Crime Unit of the Commissionerate Police.
The operation was led by Special Crime Unit officer Anup Kanungo.
Sheikh Jamshed, a notorious drug peddler, had previous cases registered against him at Lalbag, Balianta, and Badagada police stations. Earlier, he was also arrested by the Crime Branch’s Special Task Force (STF) on charges of smuggling drugs. On the night of the incident, Jamshed was travelling from Pokhariput to Khandagiri when he was being followed by the Special Crime Unit officers.
When officers moved in to arrest him, Jamshed reportedly resisted. Jamshed allegedly opened fire on the officers, prompting the latter to retaliate. As a result, Jamshed received a bullet in his leg.
Jamshed was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.
It is learnt that Jamshed, who had been under police surveillance for months, was linked to several cases involving drug trafficking.
Brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh and a mouser were seized from his possession.
