Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow warning on Monday for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds, with speeds reaching 40-50 km/h, across various districts in Odisha until April 23.
Additionally, the IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over Odisha from April 24 to 26.
According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin, light rain or thundershowers are expected to occur in the afternoon and evening hours at one or two locations over the following districts, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi. Dry weather is expected to prevail over the remaining districts of Odisha on April 22.
The IMD further issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h, very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening at one or two places over the districts of Koraput and Malkangiri. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds at speeds of 30-40 km/h are expected in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two locations over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi.
On April 23, light rain or thundershowers are expected in the afternoon and evening over Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nawarangapur, with dry weather over the remaining districts of Odisha. The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30-40 km/h) over Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur.
In addition, a yellow warning has been issued for heatwave conditions that are very likely to affect Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur.
From April 24 to 26, the IMD predicts the likelihood of heatwave conditions prevailing over Boudh, Nuapada, Sonepur, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh. Hot and humid conditions are expected at one or two locations over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati on April 24.
The IMD has also warned of hot and humid conditions continuing in the same districts (Balasore, Bhadrak, etc.) until April 26. During this period, light rain or thundershowers are likely in the afternoon or evening over Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Keonjhargarh. Dry weather is expected in the remaining districts of Odisha.
The IMD has further predicted that the maximum day temperature is likely to rise by 3-5°C over the next three days, with no significant changes expected thereafter. The maximum temperature is forecasted to exceed 42°C in districts like Angul, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh, Kalahandi, and Nuapada.
