Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik left for New Delhi this afternoon to attend a commemorative event at the Russian Embassy, where his father, legendary statesman Biju Patnaik, will be honoured for his courageous contributions during World War II.
The event, scheduled for May 7, is part of a broader two-day programme marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany. During the war, Biju Patnaik played a key role in supporting the Soviet Red Army, particularly in the Stalingrad campaign, where he is remembered for flying daring missions to supply arms and aid.
In recognition of his valor, the Russian Embassy will unveil a commemorative plaque to Biju Patnaik on its premises. The Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, personally invited Naveen Patnaik to attend the ceremony.
The celebration on May 9, observed globally as Victory Day, will include diplomatic and cultural tributes to the heroes of WWII. Biju Patnaik remains one of the rare Indian figures acknowledged internationally for active combat support during the war.
