Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert after a low-pressure system intensified into a deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts. The system is moving northwards at a speed of 20 kmph.
As of 0830 hours IST, the deep depression is centred near latitude 21.3° N and longitude 88.5° E, approximately 60 km southeast of Sagar Island and 110 km east-southeast of Digha.
The IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several northeastern states. The affected regions are expected to experience thunderstorms and strong winds.
The deep depression is likely to cross the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by afternoon, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region.
