Sambalpur: An Assistant Professor of GM University has been arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a student under the false pretext of marriage. The accused, 32-year-old Gopikant Suna of the Department of Education, was taken into custody after the student filed a complaint on Wednesday.
The complainant, a 20-year-old second-year BA-BEd female student at GM University, approached Sambalpur Mahila Police Station on July 16 at 2.36 PM, alleging that Suna had entered into a physical relationship with her after assuring her of marriage, only to later renege on that promise. Police have registered a case under section 69 BNS.
She stated that the alleged exploitation took place at the accused’s government quarter in the Professor Colony at Budharaja, Sambalpur. The student, who currently lives in a rented house in Angulalane, said the abuse had caused her immense emotional distress.
Based on her complaint, police arrested the accused and produced him before the court.
University officials are yet to issue a public statement on the matter.
