Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of National Handloom Day, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the handloom fair “Ekta” at Janata Maidan and stated that handlooms are a major pillar of Odia identity.

He emphasized that the handloom sector is not only an economic backbone but also a symbol of national pride and glory. From ancient maritime trade to modern global fashion platforms, Odia weaving has always celebrated excellence, spirituality, and culture.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the government aims to improve the socio-economic condition of weavers through handloom development schemes.

During the event, the Chief Minister announced that renowned actress Madhuri Dixit has been appointed as the brand ambassador for Odisha Handloom for one year. He expressed hope that with her active support, Odisha handloom garments will gain prominence in the global fashion world.

The Chief Minister noted that over 1.3 lakh weavers and allied workers are directly engaged in the handloom sector across Odisha’s 30 districts. Through primary weaver cooperative societies, self-help groups, and producer groups, weavers are organized to preserve the weaving heritage.

He also mentioned that at the largest textile conclave in eastern India, 33 MoUs worth ₹7,808 crore have been signed to establish the textile industry in the state, creating 53,300 employment opportunities.

He further stated that the government is committed to providing infrastructure and institutional support. Handloom parks with facilities like dye houses, warehouses, design studios, and quality control labs are being developed in Bargarh and Cuttack. Over 40 master weavers from Odisha have been honored with national awards for excellence and innovation.

The Chief Minister called for respecting weavers and using their products, echoing the spirit of the Swadeshi movement started 120 years ago.

During the event, the Chief Minister unveiled the mascot “Resha” for Handloom Day and a short film on the handloom industry. He also felicitated handloom weavers from the state. The handloom fair, which began today, will continue at Janata Maidan until August 13.

As a distinguished guest, Madhuri Dixit, the brand ambassador for Odisha Handloom, said she feels the heartbeat of the weavers. She described handlooms as not just textiles but the identity of every Odia, an integral part of the state’s culture and lifestyle.

Textiles, Handlooms, and Handicrafts Minister Pradeep Bal Samant stated that under the Chief Minister’s leadership, steps are being taken to preserve the glorious tradition of weaving while transforming it into a modern, market-driven product. Schemes like the Mukhya Mantri Hastatanta  Shramika  Samman Yojana, Handloom Artisan Expansion Policy, and various industrial fairs and grants ensure the upliftment of artisans. He urged the new generation to wear Odisha handloom garments, honour artisans, and embrace swadeshi products.

Among others, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg was present. Departmental Commissioner-cum-Secretary Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar delivered the welcome address, and Director Textiles & Handloom Prem Chandra Chaudhary proposed the vote of thanks.
