Bhubaneswar: The class IX student of Budharaja High School in Sambalpur has been rescued safely after she had jumped into the Mahanadi River from Chaurapur Bridge. She was found near Govindatala bridge and admitted to the Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, Arita Bisi arrived at the bridge on her bicycle, leaving her bag and mobile phone behind, before taking the extreme step. The bag, which was later recovered, contained question papers. Her cycle was also seized by the police.
Arita, an orphan who had been granted free admission to the school, was studying at her relative’s house. The reasons behind her drastic action are still unknown. The headmistress of the school, Subhrata Pati, expressed concern over the incident, highlighting Arita’s background as an orphan who received free books and study materials.
The rescue operation was carried out by fire personnel who launched an intensive search in the swollen river with the help of a powerboat. The timely intervention saved Arita’s life, and she is currently receiving medical treatment.
