Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a significant milestone in freight transportation by unloading over 100 million tons of cargo within just 148 days of the current financial year, officials said Tuesday.
As of August 26, 2025, ECoR has handled 100.55 million tons, marking an 8% growth compared to the same period last year—an increase of 7.43 million tons.
Division-wise performance: Khurda Road Division: 58.1 million tons; Waltair Division: 25.46 million tons; Sambalpur Division: 17 million tons
The zone plays a vital role in meeting the logistics needs of industries and ports under its jurisdiction, including Paradeep, Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Gopalpur, and Dhamra. Key sectors served include steel, power, aluminum, fertilizers, and cement, with commodities such as coal, iron ore, alumina, manganese, and bauxite forming the bulk of the traffic.
ECoR officials highlighted that the achievement came 12 days earlier than in FY 2024–25 (160 days) and 23 days earlier than in FY 2023–24 (171 days), underscoring improved operational efficiency and stronger port connectivity.
Railway authorities credited sustained improvements in freight handling, faster turnaround times, and enhanced coordination with ports and industries for this growth.
ECoR reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s industrial and economic growth by ensuring the faster, seamless movement of essential goods across sectors.
