Bhubaneswar: The passing of former Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey has brought shock and grief to the Odisha political fraternity. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida have expressed their deep condolences to the bereaved family.

The leaders took to their X handles to convey their condolences to the bereaved family

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conveyed his heartfelt condolences, praying for the peaceful rest of the departed soul.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of senior leader and former Biramitrapur legislator George Tirkey. I convey my condolences to the grieving family and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the peaceful departed soul,” the CM tweeted.

Deputy CM Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo remembered George Tirkey as a respected voice from Sundargarh, highlighting his four terms in the Odisha Legislative Assembly and commitment to tribal rights and principled politics.

He wrote: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri George Tirkey ji, former MLA from Birmitrapur and a respected voice from Sundargarh. His decades of public service—across four terms in the Odisha Legislative Assembly—reflected a deep commitment to tribal rights, grassroots leadership, and principled politics. Odisha has lost a dedicated son of the soil. May Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath bless his soul and give strength to his family and admirers in this hour of grief.”

Deputy CM Pravati Parida also expressed shock and sadness, praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extending condolences to his family.

She wrote: “I am saddened and deeply shocked to hear the news of the demise of the well-known tribal leader and former Biramitrapur MLA, George Tirkey. I pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extend my condolences and best wishes to his family.”

The leaders’ tributes reflect the impact of George Tirkey’s contributions to Odisha’s political landscape.

Notably, Tirkey was a well-known labour and tribal leader and had represented the Biramitrapur constituency four times as an MLA in 1995, 2000, 2009, and 2014. He had won the elections on different party tickets, including Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as an independent candidate, and from the Samata Kranti Dal.
