Bhanjanagar: In a tragic incident, a man was swept away by strong river currents in Badangi village under Tarasingi police limits of Ganjam district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Bijay Sahu, a resident of the same village. According to reports, Bijay had gone to the Haguri River near his home early in the morning to relieve himself. However, due to heavy rainfall in the upstream areas, the river’s water level had risen sharply, creating a strong current.
Unaware of the dangerous flow, Bijay reportedly slipped into the water and was carried away by the current. His family searched for him but, after failing to locate him, alerted the Bhanjanagar Fire Station.
A rescue team from the Bhanjanagar Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and, after a search operation, recovered the body from the river. It was later sent to the Bhanjanagar Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered an unnatural death case and initiated further inquiry into the incident.
