Rourkela: A picnic outing turned tragic on Friday when a group of students from an English-medium school in Rourkela met with a mishap at the Ghagara waterfall near Lathikata-Birakera in Sundargarh district. Two students drowned, while two others remain missing as rescue operations continue.
According to preliminary reports from the Fire Services Department, the students had gone to the popular waterfall for a picnic in the afternoon. The group included Abhijit Hobo, Sumit Seth, Abhishek Sahu, Pritam Hansda, Om Suna, and Anurag Das.
Local sources said that while enjoying near the waterfall, some students slipped and were swept away by the strong current. Upon receiving information, the Fire Services team rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Two of the students were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Two students — Om Suna and Anurag Das — remain missing, and intensive search operations are underway to trace them.
