Bhubaneswar: The redevelopment of two crematoriums at Kaligadia and Garabadu in Bhubaneswar’s Old Town area has officially begun, with Ekamra MLA Babu Singh laying the foundation stones on Friday.

The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) will execute the projects to enhance infrastructure and ensure dignified spaces for conducting last rites.

According to project details, the Kaligadia crematorium will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹2.21 crore, while the Garabadu crematorium will undergo redevelopment at a cost of ₹1.85 crore. The upgraded facilities will include parking areas, boundary walls, security kiosks, caretaker and staff rooms, separate changing rooms for men and women, waiting halls, pyre wood storage, and cremation platforms (pindis).

To further improve the surroundings, the BDA will develop water bodies, internal pathways, peripheral drains, and landscaped areas, creating a clean, green, and tranquil environment for mourners.

The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by local Corporators, BDA Secretary Manas Ranjan Padhi, and other senior officials. Speaking on the occasion, BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana urged local residents to cooperate for the timely completion of both projects and informed that another modern crematorium is being developed at Dumuduma.

These redevelopment projects, officials said, reflect the government’s commitment to providing dignified, accessible, and well-maintained facilities for the deceased and their families. As Bhubaneswar continues to evolve as a Smart City, such initiatives aim to balance urban development with compassion and respect during moments of grief.
