Baragada: Sushil Meher, selected to portray the demon king Kansa in the 2025-26 edition of Baragada Dhanu Yatra, resigned from the role on Monday amid protests and criticism over his performance.
Meher, accompanied by his supporters, met Baragada Collector Aditya Goyal, who is also the president of the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti, and submitted his resignation letter.
Explaining his decision, Meher said the controversy allegedly fuelled by vested interests had caused him considerable distress. He expressed hope that the festival committee would give him another opportunity to perform in the future.
As per the existing practice, a person selected to play Kansa is expected to continue in the role for three years. However, Meher decided to step down in view of the opposition from various quarters.
His performance had drawn criticism, with several people questioning his suitability for the iconic role. At a recent meeting of the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti, various committees reportedly recommended his removal. The committee had asked him to communicate his decision within 15 days.
With Meher’s resignation, the selection process for the role of Kansa is set to begin afresh. Speculation is rife that one of the top five contestants from the previous selection process may be chosen to portray the central character.
The 2025-26 edition of the world-famous open-air theatrical extravaganza is scheduled to be held from January 12 to 22. With preparations gathering pace and the festival approaching, attention has now shifted to the selection of the next Kansa.
