Bargarh: Bargarh Sadar police arrested five persons for allegedly murdering a 25-year-old man named Ajit Bag in Kendpali Bazar area.
The accused, identified as Debananda Huye (42), Satya alias Satyaban Sahu (35), Sourav Bhoi (25), Sudama Saraf (27), and Sahil Bhoi (26), were arrested on Sunday.
According to the police, the incident occurred on October 22 when Ajit was brutally assaulted by the accused over a previous enmity. The police stated that Sudama had a prior dispute with Ajit, which escalated into a physical altercation on the day of the incident. On October 22, Ajit had come to Dasmail Square to watch Kali Puja with his friends. While they were watching the festivities, accused Sudama spotted him. Shortly after, Debananda called Ajit to Kendpali Market. When Ajit arrived, Sudama got into an altercation with him, and both got into a heated argument.
Meanwhile, Ajit’s friends started searching for him as he didn’t return to the Kali Puja event for a long time. They saw Sudama beating Ajit and soon, other accused – Debananda, Satya, Sourav, and Sahil – arrived at the scene with lathis and attacked Ajit, inflicting fatal injuries. Fearing retaliation, Ajit’s friends fled the scene upon witnessing the brutal attack by the accused.
The accused reportedly attempted to make the murder look like an accident by moving Ajit’s blood-soaked body to a nearby National Highway (NH-53). However, a passerby named Subas Pradhan spotted Ajit’s body and, with the help of others, rushed him to the District Headquarters Hospital. However, the doctors declared Ajit dead upon arrival.
The police investigation revealed that the accused had also stolen Rs 30,000 from Ajit’s possession. Police have registered a case under Section 319/25 (murder) and have seized two motorcycles from the accused.
The arrests were made based on a complaint filed by Ajit’s family members. The police are further investigating the matter to uncover any potential motives behind the crime.
