Sambalpur: A quiet evening in Palokhaman village under the Jamanakira police station turned into a scene of gruesome murder on Tuesday, after a man allegedly bludgeoned his wife to death with an iron pipe following a domestic argument.
The deceased has been identified as Mamata Majhi, 50.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred around 7:30 PM. Mamata was reportedly inside their home, engaged in a mobile phone conversation, while her husband, Shrikar, was outside. The tranquility shattered when Shrikar asked his wife to prepare food. An argument ensued after Mamata did not comply with his demand.
Officials stated that the verbal altercation quickly escalated. In a fit of uncontrollable rage, Shrikar stormed into the house, seized a metal pipe lying near the chulha (earthen stove), and repeatedly struck Mamata on the head with immense force. The brutal assault caused her to collapse on the spot, and she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
Despite the violence, the incident remained concealed from the neighbourhood throughout the night. The grim truth only surfaced on Wednesday morning when villagers, noticing Mamata’s absence, questioned Shrikar. In a chilling confession, he openly admitted to having murdered his wife the previous night, sending shockwaves through the community.
Upon being alerted, a police team led by IIC Padmalaya Sahu promptly arrived at the scene. The team, which included SI Manoranjan Das, ASI Niranjan Pradhan, and constables, conducted a thorough spot examination and initiated the initial investigation.
Following the probe, the Jamanakira police have registered a murder case.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the complete sequence of events and the exact circumstances that led to the extreme act of violence.
