Bhubaneswar: The state government is running 52 de-addiction centres in Odisha, Minister for Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Nityananda Gond informed the State Assembly today.
Replying to a question by MLA Tankadhara Tripathy, the Minister informed that 41 centres are being run with central government funding in 29 districts, while 11 centres are being run with state government funding in 10 districts.
The Minister stated that 15 inmates can be accommodated in each of the central government-funded centres, while 30 inmates can be accommodated in each of the state government-funded centres. The inmates are provided with free food, accommodation, treatment, and vocational training for a month.
According to National Human Rights Commission data, one inmate of ‘Chetana’ de-addiction centre in Dhenkanal district died in in 2021. This rehab centre is funded by the central government. However, no such incident has been reported from the state government-funded centres.
The state government-funded centres have been operational since February 2024 and receive an annual grant of Rs 74,32,000, which includes a non-recurring cost of Rs 7,00,000 and a recurring cost of Rs 67,34,000.
