Bhubaneswar: The sale of liquor in Odisha has witnessed a steady growth over the past five years, resulting in a significant increase in excise revenue for the state. This was revealed by Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
The Excise Minister’s reply came in response to a query raised by MLA Tankadhara Tripathy seeking details on the quantity of country liquor, foreign liquor, and beer consumed in the state, as well as the amount produced locally and imported from other states over the past five years.
According to the Minister, Odisha has witnessed the steady growth in the sale of various types of liquor and the corresponding increase in excise revenue over five financial years, from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
According to the data, the sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) has shown consistent growth, rising from 543.32 lakh bulk litres in 2020-21 to 840.3 lakh bulk litres in 2024-25. This includes both liquor manufactured within Odisha and imported from other states. Beer sales have also seen a significant increase, growing from 471.11 lakh bulk litres in 2020-21 to 1678.77 lakh bulk litres in 2024-25, with contributions from state-manufactured and imported quantities. Country liquor, which is entirely manufactured within the state, has grown from 82.53 lakh bulk litres in 2020-21 to 183.28 lakh bulk litres in 2024-25. Similarly, out-still liquor, another category of state-manufactured liquor, has increased from 909.8 lakh bulk litres in 2020-21 to 1314.72 lakh bulk litres in 2024-25.
The Excise Minister also shared data on excise revenue collection, including VAT, which has steadily risen over the years.
