Koraput: In a tragic turn of events, a man who had gone to perform the last rites of a relative lost his own life in a road accident in Koraput district on Saturday.
According to sources, Hari Majhi (43) of Paliguda village under Chandrapada Panchayat in Baipariguda block had travelled to Bamuniput along with family members and relatives after receiving news of the death of his maternal uncle. The group had gone in an auto-rickshaw to participate in the funeral rites.
After the last rites were completed, the group was returning to Paliguda in the same auto-rickshaw at around 2:30 pm. However, near Burudiput Chhak on the Digapur road, close to a stone quarry area under Baipariguda police station limits, the auto-rickshaw reportedly lost balance and overturned.
The accident left seven persons, including the driver, injured, while Hari Majhi sustained critical injuries. Local residents rushed to the spot, rescued the injured, and arranged for their transportation to the District Headquarters Hospital at Jeypore by ambulance.
Despite medical efforts, Hari Majhi succumbed to his injuries at around 5 pm while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following the incident, Baipariguda police were informed and reached the spot to initiate an investigation. Police sources said that the post-mortem examination will be conducted on Sunday, after which the body will be handed over to the bereaved family.
Hari Majhi’s untimely death has left his family members shattered, and a pall of grief has descended over Paliguda village, where mourning prevails.
