Koraput: A major road accident occurred on National Highway–26 near the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Sunabeda town of Koraput district on Friday, causing panic among commuters and disrupting traffic movement.
According to preliminary reports, a truck reportedly suffered a brake failure near Alison Hotel, following which it rammed into two four-wheeled pickup vehicles moving ahead of it. The speeding truck also hit at least eight motorcycles parked or moving along the roadside.
The impact of the collision was severe, leading to the collapse of an electric pole at the accident site. An ATM cash van was also hit during the incident and overturned on the highway.
The driver of one of the four-wheeled vehicles sustained serious injuries and was immediately shifted to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far, though all eight motorcycles involved in the mishap were completely damaged.
On being informaed, Koraput Sadar Police and personnel from the Fire Services rushed to the spot and launched rescue and clearance operations. Traffic on the busy national highway was temporarily affected as authorities worked to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal movement.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
