Bhubaneswar: Excise Department officials have arrested a law student along with two others for allegedly peddling brown sugar here. The sleuths seized 265 grams of brown sugar, estimated to be worth around ₹27 lakh, from their possession.
The arrested persons have been identified as Debiprasad Das, a law student studying in a city-based college, and his associates Sukant Nayak and Santosh Nayak.
According to officials, Das had earlier been booked in a murder case under the Airfield police station limits in Bhubaneswar.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio was actively involved in supplying brown sugar to college students, using WhatsApp and other social media platforms to contact prospective buyers. The accused reportedly procured the contraband from Khordha and sold it in areas such as Forest Park and the Bhubaneswar airport vicinity.
Excise officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the racket and identify other persons involved in the drug supply network.
