Bhubaneswar: Keonjhar is set to become a hub for theatre and performing arts, as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the establishment of a branch of the National School of Drama (NSD) in the district. Speaking at the closing ceremony of an acting workshop organised by the dance institute Spiritza and NSD at the Keonjhar District Auditorium today, the Chief Minister emphasised the vital role of art and culture in society.
“Art and culture are the soul of any society. They reflect our thoughts, our struggles, our hopes, and our dreams,” said Majhi, adding that drama is a powerful medium that not only entertains but also educates, spreads awareness, and connects people with the emotions of society.
Highlighting the significance of NSD, he said, “The National School of Drama has played a historic role in shaping Indian theatre and connecting artists with the performing arts across generations. With a branch coming to Keonjhar, we aim to bridge traditional and modern art forms, providing new opportunities for young talent in the region.”
The Chief Minister praised Odisha’s cultural richness, from classical dance forms like Odissi and Chhau to tribal art and folk performances. “Every corner of Odisha resonates with folk music and art. Tribal culture is deeply linked with Utkal traditions, and our government has taken steps to preserve and promote these art forms,” he said.
Majhi also highlighted Odisha’s unique folk performances such as the Bharat Lila of Ganjam, Dand Nacha (also called Jhamu Yatra), and Mayurbhanj’s world-famous Chhau Nacha, noting that these forms beautifully combine classical and tribal elements.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s motto, “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi,” the Chief Minister said, “Our government is committed to both development and the promotion of Odisha’s cultural identity. Several programs have been launched to protect and promote the Odia language, traditions, and heritage.”
The event was attended by Keonjhar MP Ananta Nayak, Karanjia Padma Charan Haiburu, Telkoi MLA Dr. Fakir Mohan Naik, District Magistrate Vishal Singh, NSD Registrar Pradeep K. Mohanty, and Spiritza founder Pragatika Mohanty.
The Chief Minister concluded by urging the youth to dream big while staying connected to their roots, reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting artists, creating new platforms for creative expression, and ensuring that Odisha’s cultural legacy thrives for generations to come.
