Bhubaneswar: A 20-year-old student of a private university in Bhubaneswar lost his life after reportedly drowning in a water-filled abandoned laterite stone quarry in the Daruthenga area on the outskirts of the city on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as N. Aditya.
According to reports, Aditya had gone to the abandoned quarry along with a group of friends for a casual outing. During their visit, he allegedly slipped and fell into the deep water-filled pit while attempting to click selfies near the edge of the quarry.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that his friends immediately attempted to rescue him, but the depth of the quarry and the steep sides made it difficult for them to reach him in time. Despite their efforts, Aditya drowned in the water.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. After a search, they managed to retrieve the body from the quarry.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by abandoned quarries and water-filled pits around the city, which often become risky hangout spots for youngsters.
