Cuttack: In a shocking incident in Cuttack, a youth was shot dead in broad daylight on Wednesday while attending a feast with friends in the Nuapada Press Colony area under Madhupatana Police Station limits.
The deceased has been identified as Soumyaranjan Jena, alias Rinku aged 33 years.
According to preliminary information, Soumyaranjan and a group of his friends had gathered to enjoy a feast when the firing took place. Eyewitnesses said the group was spending time together when an unidentified person suddenly opened fire, triggering panic in the locality.
Soumyaranjan sustained a bullet injury to his chest and was immediately rushed to SCB Medical College & Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival. The sudden act of violence in a residential area during daytime has left residents in shock.
Friends of the deceased described him as a talented cricketer and said he had no known enmity with anyone. They expressed disbelief over the incident, stating that they were unaware of any dispute that could have led to such an attack.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain who fired the shot and the motive behind the killing. The circumstances leading to the firing remain unclear, and officials are examining all possible angles, including personal rivalry and other disputes.
