Odisha Utsav Debuts In Kolkata To Connect With Odia Diaspora

Bhubaneswar: In a significant initiative to connect with the Odia diaspora and promote the State’s rich cultural heritage beyond its borders, the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha, organised Odisha Utsav for the first time in Kolkata. The cultural festival was held today at the auditorium of the National Library in Kolkata.

Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that Odisha Utsav has been organised for the first time under the initiative of the Culture Department to strengthen the bond with the Odia diaspora. He noted that Non-Resident Odias have been playing a vital role in promoting and popularising Odisha’s rich art, literature, heritage, and cultural traditions across different parts of the country and the world.

Extending his greetings on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Minister conveyed his best wishes to the women of the Odia diaspora. He highlighted the significant role played by women in preserving the traditions and cultural values of Odia families and in carrying them forward globally.

The Minister further remarked that the Odia diaspora can rightly be described as the cultural ambassadors of Odisha. Though many Odias reside outside the State, he said, their emotional and cultural connection with Odisha remains deeply rooted. He emphasised that the participation and contribution of the Odia diaspora will be crucial in realising the vision of Viksit Odisha–2036.

Minister Suraj also stated that the Directorate of Odisha Paribar, under the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, has been actively working to extend all possible support and assistance to Odias living outside the State. Reiterating the government’s commitment, he said that the Odisha Government remains dedicated to the development and welfare of the Odia diaspora community.

During the programme, the Minister felicitated distinguished Odia writers from the diaspora as well as members of the Odia community living outside Odisha.

The festival showcased the State’s rich folk traditions and cultural heritage, along with exhibitions of traditional cuisine, handloom, and handicraft products of Odisha. The cultural segment featured vibrant performances by artists presenting Odissi, Sahi Jata, Chhau, Ghumura, Dhemsa, Pashumukha, and Sambalpuri dance, reflecting the diverse artistic traditions of the State.

Bijay Ketan Upadhyay, Secretary, Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department; Chandra Sekhar Hota, Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Akademi; Ravi Narayan Mahapatra, President, Utkaliya Milita Mancha; Bijay Kumar Barik, General Secretary (Education Group), Utkaliya Milita Mancha, along with members of various Odia diaspora organisations, were present at the event.

Pritish Panda, Officer on Special Duty, Directorate of Odisha Paribar, delivered the vote of thanks.
