Odisha Govt Reaffirms Positive Stance On Resuming Campus Polls

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is actively considering the resumption of student union elections in colleges and universities across the state, with ongoing discussions focused on conducting the polls smoothly and feasibly.

Informing the State Assembly on Friday, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj reiterated the government’s positive outlook toward organising these elections. He clarified that the process has not been discontinued and remains under serious consideration.

The Minister highlighted that detailed deliberations are underway to evaluate the framework, ensure campus peace, and align with academic schedules. This comes amid growing anticipation among students and educational institutions for the revival of democratic participation on campuses.

Student union elections, viewed as a key platform for nurturing leadership and civic engagement, have been stalled in Odisha since 2017. The hiatus began due to Cyclone Titli in 2018, followed by cancellations in 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns further prevented polls in 2020 and 2021.Earlier statements from Minister in May 2025 and September 2025 affirmed the BJP-led government’s intent to resume the elections, taking inputs from all sections of society.
