Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) on Tuesday signed an agreement with Singapore-based Surbana Jurong for the preparation of a comprehensive master plan for a proposed New City in Bhubaneswar.
The project, spread over around 800 acres across Gothapatna, Malipada and Daspur mouzas, is envisaged as a multi-economic growth zone aligned with the state’s long-term development vision, ‘Vikshit Odisha 2036’.
The agreement was signed by BDA Secretary Manas Ranjan Padhi and Surbana Jurong’s Deputy Director Manideep Dutta in the presence of senior officials, including Deputy Commissioner and Nodal Officer (New City) Bhabataran Sahu and other planning authorities.
According to officials, the proposed New City will be developed as a transit-oriented urban hub with a focus on efficient public transport systems, reduced travel time and integrated mixed land use.
A key component of the project will be the provision of inclusive and affordable housing options under the “Housing for All” framework, catering to various income groups.
BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana said the city will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) facilities, plug-and-play innovation hubs and advanced data management centres.
He added that the plan will emphasise creative placemaking through central forest parks, gateway plazas and vibrant public spaces aimed at enhancing community engagement.
The project will also incorporate smart and green infrastructure solutions to promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience and improved quality of life.
BDA, the nodal agency for the project, expects the New City to guide Bhubaneswar’s planned expansion, curb unregulated urban sprawl and strengthen urban infrastructure. It is also projected to generate employment, attract investments and promote inclusive growth by ensuring access to housing and essential community facilities.
