Jeypore/ Malkangiri: A mild earthquake struck parts of southern Odisha late on Saturday night, sending tremors through several areas in Koraput and Malkangiri districts and causing panic among residents.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake measured magnitude 4.4 and occurred at around 11:31 pm IST on April 4, 2026. The epicenter was located near Koraput district at coordinates approximately 18.573°N, 82.559°E, with a shallow depth of 5 km.
The tremors were widely felt in Koraput and surrounding areas, including Jeypore, Lamtaput, Sunabeda, Borigumma, Semiliguda, Nandapur, Pattangi, Damanjodi, and Jaipur. Residents reported shaking of furniture, beds, chairs, and roofs lasting several seconds.
Many people rushed out of their homes in fear.Similar mild tremors were experienced in Malkangiri district, particularly in areas like Kudumulugumma (Khairput block), Patra Put (Mathili block), Sadashivpur village (Chitapari panchayat of Korukonda block), and parts of Chitrakonda block. The shaking lasted about 6 to 8 seconds, with reports of utensils, cushions, and kitchen items falling from shelves.
No major damage to property or injuries have been reported so far.The shallow depth of the quake made it more perceptible in the region despite its moderate magnitude. Authorities have confirmed there were no casualties or significant structural damage.
Local residents described the experience as sudden and alarming, with some saying the ground shook noticeably for around 30 seconds in certain pockets, though official data points to a brief but intense tremor.
