Bhubaneswar: The Under-17 competitions of the 69th National School Games Federation of India (SGFI) Rugby Championship 2025–26 witnessed thrilling action at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, with host Odisha clinching the girls’ title and Bihar securing the boys’ championship.
In the Under-17 girls’ category, Odisha delivered an impressive performance to lift the trophy. Bihar finished as the runner-up, while Maharashtra and Delhi secured the third and fourth positions, respectively.
In the Under-17 boys’ category, Bihar emerged victorious after a strong performance in the final against Odisha, which secured the runner-up position. Maharashtra and Rajasthan finished third and fourth, respectively.
The valedictory ceremony for the Under-17 category was attended by Director of Sports and Youth Services, Dr. Yeddula Vijay, as the Chief Guest. Among the other dignitaries present were Director of Secondary Education Birendra Korkora, Assistant Director (PET) Jyoti Prasad Parida, and Tournament Observer Arvind Yadav.
Chief Guest Dr. Yeddula Vijay praised the young athletes for their dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship. He congratulated the winners and encouraged all participants to continue striving for excellence and aim for higher levels of competition.
Director of Secondary Education Birendra Korkora highlighted the importance of school sports in shaping well-rounded individuals and appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders involved in organising the championship.
Addressing the gathering, Tournament Observer Arvind Yadav appreciated the high level of competition and commended Odisha for successfully hosting the event. He emphasised that such championships play a vital role in promoting rugby at the grassroots level.
The championship will continue with the Under-14 boys’ and girls’ matches scheduled on April 9 and 10, 2026, at the same venue.
