Bhubaneswar: A woman and her young son tragically died in a road mishap on the National Highway near Simulia police station in Balasore district after heavy iron plates loaded on a truck slipped and crushed them on Friday.
The deceased belonged to the family of Bijay Soren from Shyamsundarpur village under Nilgiri police limits.
According to reports, the family had gone to Paradip in search of employment. After finishing their work, seven family members had taken a lift on a goods truck from Chandikhol. They were seated in the open rear portion of the vehicle. The incident took place when the truck suddenly braked upon encountering a road hump on the highway. The abrupt halt caused the stack of iron plates to shift and slide violently towards the back. The falling plates landed directly on the passengers in the rear, seriously injuring the woman and her son on the spot.
Locals quickly came forward to help and rushed the injured to Simulia Community Health Centre where doctors pronounced both dead upon arrival.
The heartbreaking tragedy has devastated the family.
