Bhubaneswar: At least 33 people were injured, including 13 critically, after a pickup van overturned near Laxmipur–Bariput ghat in Koraput district on Friday night.
All the injured were immediately rescued and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jeypore for treatment. The victims are residents of Jangidi village under Bandhugaon block.
The accident occurred when a group of villagers was returning to Bala village under Narayanpatna police station limits after attending a wedding banquet. The vehicle, reportedly carrying around 40 passengers, lost control on the ghat road and overturned.
Preliminary information suggests the group had travelled to attend a marriage reception and was returning after the event when the mishap took place in the evening hours. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
On receiving information, Narayanpatna police rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation.
