Bhubaneswar: The Puri Police have imposed a complete ban on bursting of fireworks at Narendra Pushkarini during the upcoming 21-day outer Chandan Yatra.
Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Prateek Singh informed that no fireworks will be allowed at Narendra Pond throughout the entire Chandan Yatra festivities, which is all set to begin from April 20.The decision has been taken in view of the tragic explosion in a firecracker stockpile that rocked the Chandan Yatra festival of Lord Jagannath at Narendra Pond in Puri which claimed 17 lives in 2024. To prevent any repeat of such a tragedy, strict restrictions have been put in place this year.
The SP stated that anyone found violating the police instruction and bursting fireworks at Narendra pond will face stringent legal action. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the sacred Chandan Yatra. The entire area around Narendra Pond will be brought under CCTV surveillance. Five platoons of police force will be deployed for security duty. The security team will be led by one Additional Superintendent Police, assisted by five Deputy Superintendents of Police, eight Inspectors and 60 homeguards. Anti-sabotage checks will also be intensified. Special emphasis has been given to crowd management and the safety of devotees.
When the deities’ chariots move from the Jagannath Temple to Narendra Pushkarini, heavy police deployment will be in place. However, the Puri SP assured that all traditional rituals and ceremonies associated with the Chandan Yatra will be performed as per custom, but with strict adherence to safety norms.
