Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds across several parts of Odisha, issuing orange and yellow weather warnings for multiple districts till April 25, 2026.
According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin issued on Monday, thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds reaching up to 50–60 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places over Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts during the afternoon and evening hours. An orange warning has been issued for these two districts due to the likelihood of severe weather conditions.
A yellow warning has been issued for several other districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput and Nabarangpur. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging between 40–50 kmph at isolated places during the same period.
The weather department further said that thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph are also likely at isolated places over Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Sambalpur and Deogarh districts.
In addition, warm night conditions are expected to persist at isolated places in Sundergarh, Balangir and Sambalpur districts. Hot and humid conditions are also likely in several coastal and adjoining districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati, between April 21 and April 25.
The IMD has advised people to remain alert, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm activity is most likely, and to take necessary precautions to avoid exposure to lightning and strong winds.
