GFS Predicts Possible Cyclone In Second Week Of May; Minister Assures Full Preparedness

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal during the second week of May, according to prediction of the Global Forecast System.

Going by the GFS forecast, a cyclonic circulation is projected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions between May 11 and 15. The system is expected to gradually intensify into a low-pressure area and may undergo further development in the subsequent days.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet to issue any official forecast or confirmation regarding this weather system.

Meteorologists have cautioned that long-range model predictions often change significantly, and clarity on the system’s track, intensity, and possible impact will emerge only in the coming days.

Reacting to the forecast, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the state government is fully prepared to tackle any eventuality.

“Odisha is a state prone to cyclones, floods, and heatwaves. Cyclonic disturbances are common in April and May. Though the IMD has not issued any official forecast yet and this is only a projection by a private agency, the state government is fully prepared. If a cyclone or flood situation arises, we are ready to face it. We are waiting for official information from the IMD,” said Minister Suresh Pujari.
