Bhubaneswar: The Bhawanipatna–Khariar road in Odisha is set to be expanded from two lanes to four lanes, fulfilling a long-pending demand of residents in the region, officials said on Monday.
The Works Department has taken up the project with the aim of strengthening regional connectivity between Kalahandi and Nuapada districts and improving road infrastructure in Western Odisha.
Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the expansion has been planned keeping in view the aspirations of the people of Bhawanipatna. He said the upgraded road will significantly improve transport facilities and benefit farmers, traders, and daily commuters.
Once completed, the four-lane road is expected to ensure faster and smoother movement of passenger buses, ambulances, and private vehicles. Officials said the project will help reduce travel time, fuel consumption, and transportation costs.
The improved road connectivity is also likely to facilitate easier movement of agricultural and forest produce, including paddy, vegetables, and other commodities, thereby boosting local trade and economic activity in the region.
According to the minister, the project is expected to attract commercial establishments such as shops, petrol pumps, hotels, warehouses, and small-scale industries along the corridor, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for local residents.
The upgraded road will also improve access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and government offices for people in nearby rural areas. Wider lanes are expected to enhance road safety and reduce the frequency of accidents, officials added.
As part of the project, five major bridges and 15 minor bridges will be constructed along the Bhawanipatna–Khariar stretch. The existing bridge over the Tel river will also be repaired and renovated to improve structural safety and durability.
The total cost of the 70-km road project has been estimated at Rs 640 crore, while bridge construction is expected to cost around Rs 91 crore, officials said.
The project is also expected to strengthen disaster response connectivity in interior areas of Western Odisha, particularly during floods and other natural calamities.
