Cuttack: In a rare and notable display of environmental consciousness, three judges of the Orissa High Court on Monday cycled from their residences to the court, highlighting the need for fuel conservation and sustainable living.
Justice Savitri Ratho, Justice V. Narasingh and Justice Sibo Sankar Mishra chose bicycles for their commute and rode up to near the Odisha Judicial Academy, from where they proceeded together to the High Court premises.
Each of the judges covered around 4 to 5 kilometres one way, sending out a strong message in favour of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting eco-friendly modes of transport.
The initiative assumes significance in the context of growing concerns over air pollution and depleting conventional energy resources. It also comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens to cut down the use of petrol and diesel and adopt cleaner, more sustainable alternatives.
Despite being accompanied by their personal security officers (PSOs), there was no special convoy or elaborate security arrangement during the commute, maintaining a simple and symbolic approach to the initiative.
The gesture drew appreciation from lawyers, court staff and passers-by, who termed it a meaningful step towards encouraging sustainable lifestyle choices and environmental responsibility.
