Sundargarh: In a major breakthrough in Odisha’s ongoing anti-drug campaign, Rourkela Police on Saturday seized brown sugar worth more than ₹2 crore during a raid at Meena Pada under Plant Site police station limits and arrested eight drug peddlers, including seven women.
Police also recovered cash amounting to ₹2.70 lakh from the accused during the operation.
The raid was conducted in the early hours as part of the state government’s ‘Nisha Mukta Odisha’ (Drug-Free Odisha) campaign aimed at curbing the illegal narcotics trade.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out on the directions of Rourkela SP Nitish Wadhwani. Three platoons of police personnel were deployed in the Plant Site police station area to crack down on the alleged brown sugar network operating in the locality.
Police said the coordinated operation led to the dismantling of an organised drug distribution network in the area. Further investigation is underway to trace the source and wider links of the seized contraband, officials added.
