Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph in several districts of Odisha over the next few days, even as light to moderate rain or thundershowers provide some relief from the prevailing heat in many parts of the state.
According to the Midday Weather Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on May 26, an upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Odisha and neighbourhood is influencing the weather pattern. Light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms have already occurred at isolated places, particularly in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts, with Muruda and Rasagovindapur recording 3 cm of rainfall.
Day-wise Forecast & Warnings (Orange Alert – Be Prepared)
Day 1 (Valid till 0830 hrs IST of 28.05.2026):
Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely at one or two places over most districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and others.
Orange Alert: Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) very likely over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Yellow warnings for gusty winds (40-50 kmph), heat wave at isolated places in Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, and hot & humid conditions in coastal districts.
Day 2 (28th to 29th May):
Similar rainfall activity expected. Orange Alert for strong thunderstorms over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Day 3 & Day 4:
Thunderstorm activity to continue with Orange Alerts shifting between northern, western, and coastal districts. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on Day 3, and Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj on Day 4.
Subsequent Days (up to June 3): Rainfall activity is expected to persist in many districts, though intensity may reduce gradually.
Temperature & Other Conditions
Heat wave conditions are likely at isolated places in western and interior districts (Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, etc.) over the next few days.
Warm night conditions also likely in Sambalpur and Bolangir.
Fishermen Advisory:
Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, is very likely along and off the North Odisha Coast on 28th and 29th May. Sea conditions will be rough to very rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during these two days.
