Bhubaneswar: High tension prevailed in the Ali police station area after villagers staged a protest demanding the immediate rescue of a youth who has gone missing after allegedly being brutally assaulted by a group of youths.
Gouranga Sethy, a young man from Mahadeipatan village, has been missing since Wednesday night after he was allegedly attacked by six youths from the same village.
According to the complaint filed by his victim’s father Arun, Gouranga was tied up and was meted out torture. Gouranga’s father, Arun Sethi, had lodged a police complaint on Friday, but no action was reportedly taken against the accused. The situation escalated after a viral video surfaced showing Gouranga with his hands and legs tied while being beaten by a group of men. The disturbing footage triggered widespread anger in the village.
Subsequently hundreds of villagers gheraoed Ali police station this afternoon, demanding the immediate tracing of Gouranga and strict action against the attackers.
However, the protest was eventually withdrawn after the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) reached the spot and assured the agitators of prompt action. However, the villagers warned that they would intensify the agitation if Gouranga is not traced soon.
It is pertinent to mention that the assault reportedly took place recently following a dispute over vehicle vandalism in Mahadeipatan village. The complainant has named six persons in the FIR which includes Prakash Pandav, Tapas Pandav, Manoj Sahu, Pratap Mahakud , Lipu Mahakud and one more person.
Police have initiated further probe into the missing youth case.
