Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a nowcast warning for Khordha district, forecasting severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail, lightning, rain and strong surface winds over the next three hours. The weather agency has issued a red alert.
According to the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, severe thunderstorms with surface wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, are very likely to occur at isolated places in the district.
The warning, issued at 3:43 PM, will remain valid until 6:43 PM on Monday. The weather office classified the forecast under the “Warning” category and stated that the occurrence of the event is “very likely”.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions against lightning strikes, hailstorms and strong winds. People are urged to avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from electric poles and vulnerable structures, and move to safer locations during the thunderstorm activity.
The IMD continues to monitor the weather situation and has asked local authorities and disaster management agencies to remain prepared for any adverse impact arising from the severe weather conditions.
