Deogarh: A man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Sanghaposi village area under the Kundheigola section of the Reamal forest range in Deogarh district on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Susant Nayak of Jagannathpur village in Angul district.
According to reports, the incident took place when Susant was returning to Sanghaposi village along with two of his friends in a car. The group reportedly came across a herd of elephants on a road in the forest stretch.
As Susant stepped out of the vehicle and attempted to run for safety, one of the elephants allegedly charged at him, caught him, and trampled him to death on the spot.
The sudden attack triggered panic among his companions, who managed to escape and alert the local authorities.
However, the recovery of the body was initially delayed due to the presence of a large herd of elephants—estimated to be around eighteen—in the area.
On receiving information, forest department personnel rushed to the spot and later recovered the body after the herd moved away. The body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination.
