Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Friday arrested an Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer in connection with the death of 28-year-old final-year MBBS student Chandrika Hembram, whose body was recovered from the sand bed of the Kathajodi River in Cuttack on Thursday (June 4).
Police identified the accused as Bhimsen Tudu, who was taken into custody from Mayurbhanj district, where he had allegedly been hiding since the incident.
Chandrika Hembram, a native of Udala in Mayurbhanj district, was a student of Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital in Balasore. Her body was recovered from the riverbed of the Kathajodi on June 4, triggering shock and prompting an intensive investigation by the Commissionerate Police.
Following the recovery of the body, police launched a search operation based on preliminary leads and allegations made by the victim’s family. The accused was subsequently tracked down and arrested for questioning, reports said.
The investigation is underway, and all possible angles are being examined.
In the meantime, it has come to light that the accused had approached the Orissa High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the case after allegations surfaced following Chandrika Hembram’s death.
The victim’s family has alleged that the accused was responsible for circumstances that led to her death. They have claimed that Chandrika died by suicide due to issues related to her relationship and have demanded a thorough probe into the matter.
Further investigation is underway.
