Normal Rainfall Expected In Odisha Despite El Niño, Farmers Need Not Panic: Minister Pujari

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Saturday urged farmers not to panic over concerns surrounding the possible impact of El Niño, assuring that the state is expected to receive normal rainfall during the monsoon season.

Speaking on the basis of weather forecasts and assessments, Pujari said Odisha is unlikely to face any major challenges due to El Niño conditions. While rainfall is expected to be lower in several parts of the country, the situation in Odisha is not expected to be alarming, he said.

“The forecast suggests that Odisha will receive normal rainfall. Farmers should not be worried. Even if there is a shortfall, the government is fully prepared with contingency measures,” the minister said.

Pujari stated that the state government has already formulated alternative strategies, including Plan 2 and Plan 3, to tackle any potential rainfall deficit. Discussions have been initiated with various departments to ensure coordinated preparedness.

He noted that the state requires around 1,452 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season and expressed confidence that precipitation levels would remain close to the required mark. Even in the event of lower-than-expected rainfall, the government has planned measures for water conservation, protection of water bodies, and implementation of irrigation projects to support agricultural activities.

“All concerned departments have been consulted on steps to conserve water resources and strengthen irrigation infrastructure. We are prepared to address any eventuality,” Pujari added.

The minister reiterated that the government is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests during the monsoon season.
