Bhubaneswar: A youth was found dead with multiple injury marks near the Bhimpur canal embankment under the jurisdiction of the Pahala police station on Wednesday morning, prompting police to investigate the case from all possible angles, including murder.
The deceased, identified as Prabhat Behera of Anantapur village, was found lying beside the canal by local residents. Deep injuries to his head and face raised suspicions of foul play.
After being alerted, a police team rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. A plastic pipe and a broken liquor bottle were recovered from the scene, while Prabhat’s scooter was found parked a short distance away.
Although the exact cause of death will be determined only after the post-mortem examination, investigators suspect that the youth may have been assaulted before his death. Police have sent the body for autopsy and are collecting evidence from the crime scene.
Prabhat’s family, however, alleged that he was murdered and that his body was dumped near the canal. His mother, Pratima Behera, demanded strict action against those responsible.
“Why did they kill my son? What wrong had he done? I want justice,” she said.
According to family members, Prabhat was involved in the supply of sand and construction materials. He had left home late on Tuesday night in connection with work but failed to return. His body was discovered the following morning.
The family further claimed that Prabhat frequently had disputes with another supplier over payment-related issues. His mother alleged that they had repeatedly advised him to stay away from the individual because of their recurring arguments.
Further investigation is underway.
