Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown on possible misuse of the special transfer policy, the Odisha government has ordered medical verification of 680 teachers who applied for transfers citing terminal illness of themselves, their spouse or their children.

Following directions issued by the Directorate of Elementary Education, the Odisha State Standing Medical Board will conduct the examinations at the Clinical Lecture Theatre near the Vaccine Store, SLN Medical College & Hospital, Koraput.

According to the schedule issued by the Chief District Medical & Public Health Officer, Koraput, 126 teachers from Rayagada will appear on July 2, followed by 179 from Nabarangapur on July 3 and 125 from Malkangiri on July 4.

Teachers from Koraput district will be examined on July 6 and July 7. July 6 is for 219 teachers, while July 7 is reserved for 32 teachers under intra-district, primary, secondary and mop-up categories.

The verification drive makes physical presence of the patient, whether teacher, spouse or child, before the Medical Board mandatory. Applicants have been asked to carry original medical records, treatment history, a copy of their online transfer application, identity proofs and passport-size photographs.

The Medical Board will thoroughly examine the genuineness of the terminal illness claims and teachers must report by 10 AM on their scheduled dates.

The drive follows directions from the Directorate of Elementary Education, Odisha, after doubts emerged over the authenticity of a large number of transfer applications submitted under the terminal illness category.
