Bhubaneswar: Odia girl Poonam Maharana has been crowned Miss Universe Odisha 2026, marking a significant milestone in her journey as she advances to the Miss Universe India finals.
The state-level selection event, held in Pune, Maharashtra, featured contestants from various states across the country. Poonam, representing Odisha, impressed the jury with her confidence, communication skills, and clarity of vision, securing her place at the national level.
Hailing from Ganjam district, Poonam is a B.Tech graduate in Computer Science Engineering with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. She represents a new generation of young Indian women who combine academic excellence with leadership qualities and social responsibility.
Her advocacy centres around environmental protection, social service, and entrepreneurship. She aims to use her platform to promote meaningful social impact and inspire youth participation in nation-building activities.
Speaking after her win, Poonam said the title carries a deeper responsibility beyond recognition. “This is not just a title; it is a responsibility to serve, inspire, and bring positive change,” she said.
Expressing gratitude, she shared her emotional journey, crediting her parents for their unwavering support. “My parents have stood by me in every step of my journey. This moment belongs to them as much as it belongs to me,” she said.
In a message shared on social media, she also thanked her mentors, acknowledging their guidance in helping her reach this stage. She described her win as the beginning of a new chapter as she prepares for the national competition.
With her eyes now set on the Miss Universe India crown and eventually the global Miss Universe platform, Poonam Maharana continues to carry forward the aspirations of Odisha with determination, ambition, and purpose-driven goals.
