Bhubaneswar: A 22-year-old youth was arrested on Sunday for allegedly circulating AI-generated morphed and obscene content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on social media, police said.
The accused, identified as Biswajit Sahu, a resident of Jagatpur in Cuttack district, was arrested by the Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Police Station in Bhubaneswar in connection with a case registered following the detection of objectionable content online.
According to police, the case came to light during routine monitoring of social media platforms by the cyber crime wing, which flagged multiple posts and reels allegedly uploaded from a handle operated by the accused.
Investigators said the accused had manipulated photographs and videos of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister using artificial intelligence tools and circulated them with obscene language, vulgar gestures and defamatory captions.
“Multiple reels were found uploaded from a social media handle created by the accused. He had manipulated images and videos of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister and added abusive and objectionable content. The account was used to circulate AI-generated and morphed visuals containing obscene language and defamatory material,” said ACP Suchismita Das of the Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Police Station.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved in the creation or dissemination of the content.
Issuing a caution, the cyber police urged citizens to exercise restraint while using digital platforms and warned against the misuse of artificial intelligence tools.
“The creation or circulation of AI-generated, morphed, obscene or defamatory content can attract legal action. People should verify information before sharing and refrain from producing or forwarding unlawful material. Any such activity should be reported to the nearest police station or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal,” ACP Das added.
