Jajpur: A 54-year-old woman drowned after allegedly slipping into a rain-swollen stream near her village in Jajpur district on Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Sushila Munda, wife of late Sanatan Munda and a resident of Udaypur Dhipasahi village under Lembo Panchayat in the Sukinda police station limits.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 9 am when Sushila had gone to the Kantapal stream to bathe and attend to nature’s call. She reportedly slipped into the water and was swept away by the strong current. Family members launched a search after she failed to return home but were unable to locate her.
On being informed, personnel from the Sukinda Fire Brigade reached the spot and recovered her body from beneath a tree near the stream. Sukinda police subsequently seized the body and registered an unnatural death case.
Police recorded the statements of the deceased’s three sons—Phukan Munda, Jaga Munda and Baliya Munda—as part of the investigation. Sukinda IIC Ramakant Muduli said further inquiry into the incident is underway.
After the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family, and the last rites were performed at the village cremation ground in the evening.
