Bhubaneswar: Doctors at KIMS Bhubaneswar have successfully saved the life of a 22-year-old man who suffered a rare and critical chest injury after an arrow pierced his lung, in what the hospital described as one of the most challenging emergency surgeries it has performed.
According to the hospital, the patient was brought to KIMS after being turned away by multiple hospitals because of the complexity of his condition. The arrow had penetrated his chest, narrowly missing the heart but causing severe damage to the lung, resulting in life-threatening bleeding that required immediate surgical intervention.
A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Amaresh Mishra, Head of the Department of General Surgery, carried out the emergency operation with support from specialists in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Anaesthesiology, and other supporting departments. The team meticulously planned the procedure to safely remove the arrow, repair the injured lung, and control the bleeding.
The hospital said the coordinated efforts of the multidisciplinary team and advanced emergency care facilities played a crucial role in the patient’s successful treatment. Following the surgery and post-operative care, the young man made a full recovery and was discharged from the hospital.
KIMS Bhubaneswar said the successful management of the rare and complex case reflects the institution’s capability to handle critical medical emergencies through timely intervention, specialist expertise, and coordinated patient care.
